Our sense of horror — and those things which evoke it — exerts a sometimes irresistible allure even as we recoil and turn (but for how long?) away. As King Louis XI observes in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, “one shrinks from it and yet one wants to look at it”. Why do we feel this approach/avoidance compulsion when faced with what disturbs us most?
