This is the state of hypnagogia, in which the dreaming mind dreams it wakes and so falsely convinces itself. Sensations in this half-world possess an unrelenting intensity – whether reveries of ravishment by some spectral presence, or the uncannily extreme body-and-will-paralyzing fear of night terrors. Our senses, all of them, have never seemed to feel so violated, or so beguiled…
