The threshold between sleep and waking is a twilight state of mind. Here meet the commonplace bits of daylight life and the oblivion of nighttime. As dreams invade our waking hours (invited or unbidden), reality too intrudes upon our repose.
This is the state of hypnagogia, in which the dreaming mind dreams it wakes and so falsely convinces itself. Sensations in this half-world possess an unrelenting intensity – whether reveries of ravishment by some spectral presence, or the uncannily extreme body-and-will-paralyzing fear of night terrors. Our senses, all of them, have never seemed to feel so violated, or so beguiled…
