Precis of Eternity in an hour

Eternity is enshrined in many faiths as the greatest aspiration and reward. Life everlasting has been sought over centuries, in quests for the Holy Grail, alchemical distillation of the Philosopher’s Stone, pursuit of elusive fountains of youth… even modern cryogenics.

Immortality, however, is not without its drawbacks. So discovered the Cumean Sybil, prophetess of the Oracle, who was granted eternal life by Apollo (“so many years as the pile had grains of dust”), while neglecting to request perpetual youth to go with it. Whether eternal ecstasy or torment, it’s the notion of the everlasting in itself, never-ending existence unceasing, that gives the greatest pause...
